I was extremely pleased with this remake. It was the first time a local newspaper reviewer, who I usually don't take to seriously, surprised me by writing a rave review, like the one I'm writing now. Being old enough to have seen the original with Steve McQueen, when I was a kid I thoroughly enjoyed the update. The Blob creature is wonderful in this remake--it's much faster and aggressive. It sends out tenticles to snatch up prey--slaps, grabs and desolves victims in wonderful special effects.
I just rewatched it and was once again impressed with the scene in the movie theatre, which in the original was just talked about and not shown. It's a gory, fast paced horror film. It's good from beginning to end. Not for small children--unless the small children are like I was when I was a kid, watching the Creature From the Black Lagoon through my fingers. But kids, under 10, may find it too intense. SciFi Fans will love it.
If you haven't seen it--and you like this kind of film--rent it on widescreen DVD ASAP and turn the sound up! |
