Fascinating, mesmerizing and at times terrifying sci-fi pic is a completely visceral experience. If viewed as a visual assault, rather than a standard movie-then this is a masterpiece.Even by today's standards the special effects are great and the film still holds up well in 2004.The story involves a self admitted mad scientist who conducts dangerous experiments on his mind using a sensory dep tank and a powerful psychedelic drug. The results are mind blowing.Talky at first with scientific jargon that is hard to decipher the movie quickly turns hallucinatory and it's hard to follow what's going on and hard to believe,as well-but is science fiction-emphasis on fiction. He transgresses somehow into a primate,cro-magnon type man (in a delicious 50's style B-Movie moment) and then enters the void and sees himself before his soul was born.He is saved from the abyss of nothing by love.Yeah-that part is pretty prepostorous and the ending is a perplexing and cheesy let-down but this film is truly amazing.William Hurt as the mad scientist is excellent in his debut film and watch for a very young Drew Barrymore as one of his daughters,in her debut. |
