A classic Hollywood romantic drama

Just watched this on Turner Classic Movies, have never seen it before and was blown away by it. Very good acting all around by Charles Boyer, Hedy Lamar and a top notch supporting cast of familiar Hollywood faces: Alan Hale Sr., Gene Lockhart and more. Was especially pleased with Hedy Lamar, one of the screens most beautiful actresses, it was nice to see her in a sensitive portrayal of a sophisticated European woman falling in love with the dangerous, sexy Pepe Lamoco. She's far better here than in her later parts where MGM tried to turn her into a homogenized filmland glamourpuss.
The cinematography is incredible, no doubt due to the artistry of the truly gifted James Wong Howe; ably abetted by the exquisite lighting, the closeups of the principal actors (especially Lamar) are lit like old master paintings. My only quibble was the quality of the print, it was dark and a bit blurred, too bad Turner couldn't find a better (or restored) one. |
