This is the gold standard of action adventure. Don't compare it to our modern sub-genre of body-blasting, heart-ripping, brain-splatting revenge-rescue films. The only word to describe this movie is Joy. Glorious, golden, youthful, summer-sweet, music driven, sweeping, infectious Joy. Start with the best musical score ever. The opening notes say 'Robin Hood'. Something came together in this movie. A young Errol Flynn. Before the booze and babes weighted him down. Olivia De Havilland. A glowing art deco Maid Marion. The sun seems to shine across her delicate pure countenance - and it does - the lighting is brilliant. None of today's sordid obsession with disecting Evil. The bad guys are revealed by their callous words, sneering smiles, dismissive gestures behind which we all know hide a dark and dangerous force. This movie is so good it doesn't matter that some of the costumes seem better suited for Santa's helpers, that there is a bit of the 'Real Hollywood Set' feel to many scenes. You can't re-make 'Casablanca'. And they haven't been able to improve on this one either. Just ask Kevin Costner (if you can get him to admit he ever tried). If you want Robin Hood, stop here. Oh, and I remember Olivia deHavilland interviewed about this movie. She said she was very young then, and had a terrible crush on Errol Flynn. She said she intentionally flubbed the kissing scenes so they would have to do them over and over again. Somthing to remember while watching. Ah youth! |
