Hollywood film making at it's best. A magnificent motion picture that has stood the test of time. Who can see this film and not say "wow"? Errol Flynn, Olivia DeHaviland are perfectly cast as Robin and Maid Marian.
Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains as treacherous villains, Sir Guy of Gisborne and Prince John are perfectly cast also. A wonderful story line about the tales and myths of Robin and his band of merry men in Sherwood fighting Prince John's treachery, awaiting the return of the rightful ruler, King Richard.
The magnificent use of technicolor (why dont we have this in movies anymore?) highlighting the wonderful costumes and greenery of Sherwood Forest (actually filmed in Chino, California) is a joy to behold. Even more stirring is the magnificent musical score of Eric Wolfgang Korngold, whose rousing music throughout the film gets you even more excited. He won an academy award for the film score. Intesting sidepiece, Korngold actually told Jack Warner that he could not do the film score on such short notice after the film had wrapped, but in an attempt to leave his native Austria before Hitler invaded, rumor has it that Warner Bros paid to move him and his family to safety in the U.S. Listen to the music at the introduction of the film and you will get excited. What else could you say about this film? It seems flawless. Check out the sword fight at the end of the film between Flynn and Rathbone - too marvelous to describe, and the look of death on Gisborne's face as he meets his doom! Perfect family/action/adventure film of all time. |
