While this movie may fare slightly better than a TV movie of the week with many people, I have to give most of the credit to Jodie Foster, who won an Oscar for her work in this film. And what unsavory material! Here we have Sarah Tobias, a rather trashy young lady who flirts with a guy in a bar and ends up getting gang raped because many of the other guys were cheering it on. So did she ask for it? Absoultely not; does a woman ever ask to be gang raped? And by rich college students, no less. So this, in turn, lessens her credibility to the point where she never even gets to testify, the word RAPE is dropped from the case, the kids get off with "reckless endangerment" instead. But it isn't over for Sarah. She is haunted by this incident, and taunted in a record store by the man who, pretty much all by himself, instigated the entire thing. So the case is opened back up again to put those men behind bars who cheered the rape on in the first place. High levels of energy in this film, mainly from Miss Foster, are what makes this a fascinating, and not repellent, film to watch. She ought to be commended, and thankfully, she has been. An important film; not just art, but it really has something to say about our society.
