Born in '79, living down the road from Elstree Studios (where Star Wars, Superman, Indian Jones etc was filmed) and 20 minutes from where Stanley Kubrick lived, I was brought up in an academic household with a father who made me watch 2001 before I was old enough to read.
The film can capture any age range and imprint it in them forever.
The story, by Arthur C Clarke (who "invented" the concept of orbiting satellites) and the genius of Stanley Kubrick are brought together in this epic tale, of mankinds struggle from ape like creature to space travellers...admittedly with the aid of extra terrestrials and a couple of monoliths.
Being a year late, when finally completed, and well over budget, 2001 broke cinematic laws and innovation. The odessey's main bridge, a cylindrical shaped room, was a marvel in itself, no to mention the design for the space ships and space stations.
Made before Mr Armstrong had tarnished the lunar lanscape with his boots, Clarke forsaw massive underground stations (a financial impossability in real life) which could support life, space stations rotating to create gravity and vessels which took off from the earth straight into orbit (Pan-Am).
This film was the first of its kind to be so...accurate in the way man has developed into the future. Ok, we were not living on the Moon in 1999 as the story tells, but if the Cold War had not come about...who knows?
A cinematic epic which can teach us all about life, peace and the mysteries of the universe. |
