As many others, I have admiration for Che Guevarra. I've read his biography, and digged for some information around. I was interested on seeing this movie when I first heard about it last year. But then I became skeptical. The film industry tends to make movies based on "true stories" that fall far away from what really happened and may mislead the public. To mention just a few: JFK, A beautiful Mind, and Black Hawk Down are few examples of movies that fall far from the "real true story". Unfortunately, Motorcycle diaries is no exception. The film, avoids the fact that Ernesto made racist remarks in his diary while travelling, mainly on blacks and maybe indians. He also made negative remarks against homosexuals. Another thing is that Ernesto Guevara was quite a horny fellow in his early years. He lost his virginity with a prostitute and use to have sex with the family maid, that should give you an idea of his youthful character. The movie presents and Ernesto who was quickly transformed by what he sees in his journey. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. Make no mistake, his journey around South America had a huge impact on his views and you CAN see the slow birth of Che in the diary. But his beliefs or complete transformation to Che did not occur till several years after his trip. More specifically while he was in Mexico. So no he didn't refuse to put his gloves on while treating the diseased and no he didn't become amicable with a black peon with leprah while in Peru.
Maybe the movimakers felt that without "bending" the truth the film wouldn't have an "inspirational" vibe to it, and perhaps they are right. Let's face it, if the movie would been done based on Che's "real" young character, the movie would have not been as interesting. However, it doesn't really make sense to want to make a film based on a true story inspirational by not telling what really happened. In short if you are interested on seeing an interesting movie about South America in the 1950's this is a movie to see. But don't expect and accurate account of events, hence don't expect to know who Guevarra was from this film. If you interested on who he was, read one of his biographies, or the motorcycle diaries (where you'll get an idea of his way of thinking when young), or his guerrilla warfare book. |
