The cast and directors of Merlin deserve great recognition for making an epic movie about magic, knights, beautiful maidens and dragons. It will amaze and stimulate all ages, but may be a bit scary for the younger set. Filling a large emptiness in the history of film and medieval movie making, this production has all the drama, special effects and romance that could be put in one film and still keep the story line in order. It is a bit gory in places, but that is not to say bad, only realistic of ancient battle between good and evil. The casting is excellent, the make-up and special effects are superb, bar none. The uniqueness of the selection of the actresses who play the roles of the young (and more grown up) Nimue, Guinnevere, Lady Igayne, Lady Elaine, Morgan Lafaye (pardon my spelling) and others cast as kings, and particularly Merlin himself, is incredible. Special accollades are due to the lead role of Queen Mab-Lady of the Lake. If you haven't seen this one, it is at once beautiful, entriguing, comical, serious, dramatic, mystical, strong, brutal, deciptive and magical. This should be required viewing for all high school english classes, and those who teach medieval literature and lore, with a balance being placed with other films about more religious themes, and also purely constitutional issues, like free speech, partiotism, the first and second amendments. This is the kind of film to watch again and again, it never loses its "magic". |
