this is a fantasy tour de force, from the beautiful location shots and flawless cgi to the dark but stirring storyline. the cast is brilliant, showcasing the likes of global talents such as sam neill, miranda richardson, helena bonham carter, isabella rossellini as well as martin short. in addition to focusing the tale on the life of merlin and his attempt to utilise sorcery for benevolent purposes, the film uses rich storytelling to weave the conflicts of religion v. paganism, magic v. nature and destiny v. free will. merlin himself is finally accessible as a full character with a range of motivations and emotional turmoil. the result of the passionate performances, art production and imaginative nature of this work is a gorgeous piece of cinema that will captivate and draw one completely into the world of arthurian legend. |
