Decent bio that possibly could've been better though it's no fault of Angelina Jolie, who does good work here. Gia Carangi was no doubt a very interesting and troubled lady who led a short, tragic life and died at 26.
Some more insight into Gia's psyche and what really drove her would've been nice. But this one moves way too fast and wallows in the sleaze for most of it's running time.
Starts off very good but derails fast, choosing to focus on Gia's drug addiction and co-dependence on lovers for fulfillment that she could never find within herself. Some very graphic scnes make this painful to watch, the heroin shooting scenes being the most painful and shown in great detail. Could've laid off a little bit on that stuff and focused on evoking emotion instead. This film doesn't have much of an emotional effect though by all rights it should. It is a very sad story about a very sad young woman who sought happiness in all the wrong places.
It is rather interesting and watchable and Jolie is dynamite and looks great (at least in the early scenes). Once she becomes ravaged by addiction and eventually AIDS, she does a good job acting that out as well. The problem is the direction and style which is too detached and episodic and too brisquely paced to allow an emotional reaction which is a shame.
I still would love to know more about Gia than this film provided. Not bad...but far from great. Effective but not nearly as much as it should've been.
Still, this is still considered a cult classic. Very graphic in every arena, an unrated deluxe version has recently become available and I would like to see it. Maybe it would bump up the rating I gave it a bit. Maybe. |
