I caught this film on cable while vacationing out of town. My wife and I were actually on our way out to dinner whenthe clicker landed on this movie. Albert Brooks' character was walking through a supermarket with his mother, portrayed by actress Debbie Reynolds. The exchange between the characters concerning the practicality of buying a $10 jar of jelly was not only hillarious, but quite profound for me personally. The scene set the stage for parent-child relationships that were never quite reconciled. It's a film that may have been written for that very purpose, to suggest that many of us have never quite worked out all the details with our parents, and that we ought to make the most of what time we have left to enjoy what can become even better relationships with our parents. It is quite the cerebral film, but funny at the same time. Being newly married, hitting mid-life, it was refreshing to know after watching this film that I wasn't alone in my constant analysis of my parents. The film moves quite slowly, but it has an immense sense of charm to it, as well as a lesson.
