I never considered watching "Jerry Maguire" until years after it was released. I have just finished watching it and now wish I had seen it sooner. With its irresistable cast, hilarious dialogue, and great acting, all I have to say is, "Show me the money!"
The movie is centered on a wealthy sports agent, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) who faces his conscience when a hockey player's young son swears at him. Jerry stays up all night, writes and publishes a "mission statement" for which he receives praise by his co-workers. However, the agency isn't pleased with Jerry's mission statement and send his secretly envious "friend" to fire Jerry at a resteraunt.
Jerry leaves his job to start a new agency and is only followed by one co-worker, friend, and eventual lover, named Dorothy (Renee Zellweger) who he grows close to over time. He also has one remaining client (Cuba Gooding Jr. in an Oscar-winning performance) who stays with him for the long run and teaches him a few lessons about life.
Cruise, Gooding Jr., and Zellweger shine in this sweet, fun, and hysterical romantic comedy. This is a comedy, yes, but it is not packed with absolute, immoderate hilarity. It is extremely funny, but remains poignant and even dramatic sometimes.
The dialogue was great. "Show me the money" was one of the most popular quotes of the 90's and probably still is quite popular today. There were just lines that got to me. Like when Dorothy's sister, Laurel says "Don't cry at the beginning of the date... cry at the end like I do." The whole thing was just adorable. The film's witty, sharp, and astoundingly hilarious screenplay earned it an Oscar nomination.
Want to watch a movie? Watch "Jerry Maguire." It'll just get to you. This film is most likely one of the funniest movies of the 90s.
