Once in a while you don't feel like the blockbuster action flick and prefer a solid drama with honest to goodness characters. "Marvin's Room" has this. I was peeked already because I was in the play. I knew the lines when entering the theater and I knew the story backwards. Meryl Streep is Lee, a hot-tempered mother of two who is forced to move to Florida when her sister Bess (Diane Keaton- Oscar nominated performance) is diagnosed with Lukemia and needs bone marrow from both of the boys. Problem: The sisters haven't spoken in years. Bess, a selfless woman, is taking care of her sick father Marvin and aunt in a small home near Disney World- where the family goes to together in the only "action" scene. Leonardo DiCaprio is Hank, just out of a mental istitution after trying to burn down Lee's house and the oldest of her two sons. Charlie, the one I played in the play, is so over-shadowed by his older brother he hides behind books and is too good for the family he's in. "Marvin's Room" is really a great joy because of Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. The other stars aren't a bright, even Robert De Niro, Keaton's doctor, can't hold a candle. Meryl once again demonstrates why she is the best screen actress since Kate Hepburn while Diane Keaton gives her finest performance since "Reds".
