Brilliant Work by Sayles.
by Edward TM (movies profile)

Outstanding example of a John Sayles film and how a great film can be done on a low(er) budget, and not look like a low-budget indie. No other filmmaker I am familiar with can bring so many facets of a story and it's charachters to your attention - and KEEP your attention the way Sayles can. This is not only great screenwriting, but great acting as well, most notably Kris Kristofferson, Chris Cooper (Academy Award Winner and long-time Sayles favorite) and Elizabeth Peña - a truly great performance on her part. Very original presentation of subject matter, especially the absence of bias, yet without the lack of viewpoint that so many bland, mainstream directors are so often guilty of. Nicely done transitions from current time to past without all the hyperbole we usually see in a film from Hollywood. Nice work, really worth the rental. Pull the shades, unplug the phone and put the kids to sleep; pay attention, there's over 50 speaking roles in this film. The last time you've seen that in a film was?..... Nice interview with Sayles (after you see the film, too many giveaways in the article) is at www .lib .berkeley. edu /MRC /sayles .html |
