Sleepers they say is a movie about revenge, but I think revenge is not the proper word, but rather, the right word is justice.
Four good friends living in New York city pulled off a mischevous yet innocent prankster that turns deadly, and which changed their lives for the worst. Years later, two of them lead normal professional lives, while the other two become notorious criminals. Then in a twist of fate, the lead jailguard who sodomized them inside the jail (played menacingly magnificent by Kevin Bacon) was recognized by the criminal ones and they dealt him the final pain which is much better than being raped as a child.
Then the trial begins and the other two conceived an elaborate plan to : 1. save their two hoodlum friends from sure prosecution, with the help of of an old mobster friend, and a good priest and 2. Deal justice to the other surviving rapists aka jailguards, thru the legal way and the dark way.
Very intriguing story, based on a novel (which from what I know is fact based). I don't know why the movie critics overrated it, but I think Sleepers is one of the best movie I have seen so far, as the involving plots and intricate story are magnificently transformed into a movie thru great acting from the likes of De Niro, Bacon, and Hoffman.
The ending is quite satisfying, yet ultimately sad, since it shows how the four friends plus one female childhood friend have a secret reunion after the trial and relives their glorious memorable past as best friends, which is also a farewell gathering as they wont be together again after that ( the two hoodlum ones met their own bloody end afterall).
Best buddies, beyond the tragedy and evil that they have to endure and live on. |
