Son of the South

A Family Thing is one of those rare movies that looks racial (dis)harmoney in the USA right in the face. The story follows the adventures of an Arkansas mechanic (Robert Duvall) who finds out, upon his father's deathbed, that his mother was actually a black woman that his father had an affair with. He also finds out that he has an older brother who is now a policeman in Chicago (James Earl Jones). The story follows the mechanic to Chicago and the meeting with his brother.
Sure, elements of racism are there. Not only in Arkansas amongst the white relatives, but in Chicago amongst the black kinfolk. The whole story is brought together by the blinded aunt, making an outstanding story. |
