Having a mother who's from Minnesota and having heard a barrage of "Oh, Ya"s here and there, I found "Fargo" to be an interesting treat.
The story is compelling. You know that something's going to go wrong, but the question is when? It doesn't get boring for you to watch the bad guys trying to get out of trouble, only to end up in a bigger hole. Instead, it's actually kind of fun, which is obviously unexpected. The good guys are just as interesting as their foes, and they're easy to relate to, as well.
The actors are the most impressive part of this movie. Frances McDormand is astounding as Marge Gunderson while Steve Buscemi, playing Carl Showalter, cracks you up in a weird way with his need to babble and with his horrible luck. It's no wonder that Ms. McDormand received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress!
The direction is almost typical of the Coen brothers, except that "Fargo" is a bit superior to their other films. The cinematography is also quite a show in itself, what with Babe the Big Blue Ox and the miles of flat plains covered with snow, found only in Minnesota. Considering that the movie has been filmed on location, nothing less should be expected. |
