Title: "Sense and Sensibility"
Year: 1995
Rating: PG
Based on Jane Austen's popular novel, "Sense and Sensibility" is a beautifully crafted film. Emma Thompson, who is actually an actress in the film, wrote the screenplay and went on to receive an Academy Award® for it. The movie is directed by Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who did a job worthy of an Oscar.
The story, which takes place in 19th century Britain, primarily follows the romances and heartbreak of sisters Elinor Dashwood (Emma Thompson, in a riveting performance) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two sisters have very divergent approaches to life: Elinor believes in 'sense' which makes her act with accordance and deliberation. However Marianne believes in 'sensibility' by giving in to her emotions and intuition.
If you are a fan of Jane Austen's novel, you'll love the film. I'd say there hasn't been as good a Jane Austen adaptation as this since 1940's "Pride and Prejudice." This is a family film, but children may get a little less enthusiastic if they do not understand what is happening.
If you liked "Sense and Sensibility" you might also enjoy "Emma" and "Pride and Prejudice."
