I was 15 when I snuck into the theater to see Heavy Metal--not once, but twice. As an owner of the movie now (and parent of 2 kids), I still enjoy it. The hand drawn animation is amazingly un-smooth compared to my kids shows today, but there is something so 'right' about it. As a former Heavy Metal subscriber, I was familiar with many of the storylines, which are themselves classic. 'Den' is almost Conan, the zombies remind you of the NEW Dawn of the Dead (strong and fast), Harold Ramis is Cheech on a spaceship, and the final segment will make you think of Tomb Raider. Together, this movie is slightly before its time, back in a day when animated movies could really be for adults too (remember Fritz the Cat, American Pop, or Fire and Ice by Ralph Bakshi?). Overlook the graphics and enjoy both the stories and the awesome soundrack. This ain't Pixar, and you should be happy about it! Enjoy!
