Richly deserved the Oscars that it took home.An undeniably powerful film about unconditional love between two lost souls.Nicolas Cage gives his best performance ever (and he's given many good ones) as a hopeless alcoholic on a death mission in Vegas.Driving drunk on the strip he meets a hooker played by Elisabeth Shue and the two form a bond that can never be broken. They stay together until the bitter end.Love, unfortunately does NOT conquer all, but it helps. And evn though Cage succombs to his alcoholism the moments he spends with Shue are the best of his and their lives. They teach eachother a lot about life. This is a truly heartbreaking film and a tearjerker that is deeply moving. If you weren't moved then you didn't get it and you didn't pay attention. It is really a simple story and yeah you can criticize the 'hooker with a heart of gold' thing but nitpicking like that is pointless. This is a very potent drama with tremendous performances and scenes of such amazing beauty, devastation and power that they evoke the truest emotions. One of my all time, top ten favorites and I'm not easily impressed.I'm a cynic and a critic and I'm guilty of nitpicking films to death. However any flaws in this film I was willing to overlook because simply put-it is a masterpiece and a true work of beauty. |
