one of the better bond films

Goldeneye is in my top 3 James Bond flicks, probably just because of the fact that it is aware of its cliches. For example, when Bond is captured by the villian and the villian says he is going to kill him, Bond says, "what? no chit-chat? it's a shame nobody knows how to run a proper interrogation these days."
References like these constantly pop up in Goldeneye, as if to say, "I know this franchise and I know it's cliched so I'm going to subtley mock and satirize it." And that it does very well, it plays more like a satire of the Bond genre than an actual Bond film at times, though it certainly doesn't go so far as to parody itself, for of course, it is a Bond film, not an Austin Powers film.
Pierce Brosnan makes a wonderful new Bond, he brings the suave style of the Sean Connery Bond and mixes it with his own new style: his James Bond actually shows hints of emotion and fright. Such as when he is trapped in a helicopter and it's going to explode in twenty seconds or so, he is sweating and is panicky. Connery's Bond would have calmly and quite unrealistically come up with a solution to the problem. However, Brosnan's Bond shows an emotive response to the situation, and in other scenes like this, which adds up for great entertainment.
Of course, like all other James Bond movies, Goldeneye features some really killer stunts and some really hot Bond girls. One of the girls is Xenia Onnatop (another name joke similar to Pusssy Galore), who is played viciously by Famke Jannsen. The other is Natalia, played by Izabella something or other (I can't remember her first name or even her last name very clearly, because they'rel ike Russian or something.) She adds some poignancy, perhaps where it is not needed, but it is a refreshment from the other films in the series.
Sean Bean is the villian, Robbi Coltrane is a Russian mob boss, and there are plenty of little sideplot conspiracies that all add up to one thing: brilliant entertainment. |
