Riget or "The Kingdom", the mid-90's mini-series made for Danish TV by auteur Lars Von Trier, may be the greatest thing I've ever seen that was made directly for the boob tube. This is coming from a Sopranos and Six Feet Under fan. The show is about the doctors and patients that inhabit a haunted hospital, and manages to be hilarious, frightening, fast-paced, metaphysical, and anything else that makes for great entertainment. The acting is astounding from even the smallest roles, but the visiting doctor from Sweden, as played by Ernst-Hugo Jaeregard, may be one of the finest dramatic performances of the 90's in any medium. Beware, this show ends on the biggest cliffhanger I've ever seen, so if you get this, you no doubt be looking for Riget II (The Kingdom, part 2), which is also excellent. |
