I have seen this film so many times, and each time I fall in love with it all over again!
Paul returns from the war to his wife Betty, he sees that she has placed all his letters in boxes and hadn't read any of them and how shallow she truly is. He sets off for the California Wine Country via the bus, to sell chocolates. On the bus he meets Victoria, who is pregnant and heading home from college to help with the family grape harvest and face her overbearing father. She tells Paul that she is afraid that her father will kill her if he finds out she is pregnant, and he offers to pose as her husband. He goes with her to the family grape fields called Las Nubes or "the clouds". They plan is she will introduce him as her husband and then disappear before morning, making her family believe that the baby is legitamate and he is just a jerk who abandoned his pregnant wife. The get to Las Nubes, and everyone is surpised that Victoria is married and her father is furious that she got married and told no one. The grape harvest begins, and Paul and Victoria end up really falling for each other while pretending to be husband and wife. Victoria's father, Alberto has a hard time accepting Paul and they have a huge fight which starts a fire in the wine fields. Everyone pulls together to put the fire out, and Alberto finally accepts Paul. But Paul, being the upstanding young man that he is, decides that he must leave despite his love for Victoria, he must return to his wife. It's just the right thing to do. Everyone is sad, and Alberto is upset because he trusted Paul. Paul heads home, and finds that the little woman, hasn't been pining away for her faithful husband, but has been getting some hot lovin' elsewhere. He is now free of his obligation to his marraige and leaves her.Paul heads back to his true love Victoria, and all is well. |
