Sandra Bullock gives a great performance, and the story of identity theft and hacking is a fascinating storyline. However, there are some scenes that are too silly to swallow and just look unrealistic. For example, consider the scene where the real Angela Bennett infiltrates the office block of her employer, a place she has never visited. Would a reclusive person really have the audacity, skill, and wit to walk into a strange office and begin using their computers? Oh look, a terminal that no-one is using, no passwords needed, either - how convenient! The scene where they catch up with her at the convention, just as she e-mailed evidence to the FBI is equally convenient. The computer graphics are just as ridiculous - the terminal graphics look like something out of Sesame Street and as for the totally unrealistic fire alarm control system, the pizza delivery website, the airline website. Let's see her editing some cryptic hex file, using a command line etc. as real hackers do!
Even more convenient is how Angela dates Devlin, exactly as he planned. Say, what if she didn't like him? And why pussyfoot around? He had plenty of opportunities to kill her and acquire the disk, yet we are subjected to repeated chase scenes. Whilst they keep the thriller factor high, it is all a bit too predictable (she types, they find her, she runs, she asks people to help her, they end up dead, she runs some more...)
If they ditched the preposterous Devlin character, and had realistic computer graphics on the monitors, then this would have been a great movie. My favorite scene is where she trying to explain to her court-appointed attourney that her indentity has been tampered with. A similar scene of identity problems in her empty house is equally funny. |
