Not Just a Lesbian Romance

This is probably going to be my most controversial selection for a sleepover movie.
Why?
It's not fluff. It may be a teen romance, but the title says it all. It's a lesbian romance. And let's be honest; isn't there an undercurrent of anger that permeates most lesbian cinema (think GO FISH, which I love but is definitely not a sleepover movie)?
Granted, but ITAOTGIL is not an angry movie. By any standard.
It is wonderfully sweet and achingly passionate, managing to capture in its tone and mood the exhilarating giddiness of first love. In fact, the director expressed the hope that the audience would eventually see that it was a love story, not just a lesbian love story.
If you can manage to make that leap, then you're in for a rare treat.
After all how many other teen love flix have successfully shown the lovebirds as real breathing human beings? How many have been able to capture physical intimacy without getting overly graphic?
ITAOTGIL manages to do it sublimely because it has the courage of its convictions. Randy and Evie share an onscreen love that is palpably real. The moment which it first manifests is in a diner, and Evie gives her self over to Randy with such total trust that made my heart ache. And giving over not on the physical level but emotional one. Difficult to do well in a primarily visual medium.
Granted the film has flaws. Sterotypical supporting characters, obviously low budget and at times self conscious and rather earnest direction.
Well, it's a sleepover movie, innit? |
