Imagine being a novice teacher and entering your classroom for the first time, only to be totally ignored and intimidated all at once. Luanne Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer, wonderful as usual) is a former Marine who decides to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher by taking on a, let's say, difficult group of high school students who are interested in anything except learning. Miss Johnson finds a way of getting through to them on their own level first with the poetry of Bob Dylan, and then expanding their horizons slowly with other vivid poems. The kids do eventually turn around and end up begging her to stay when she says she is leaving after the street murder of one of her students.
This is ultimately a feel good film with much humanity; one of those films that you really ought to see. Production wise, it's like a TV movie of the week with many expletives thrown into the mix. But the bottom line (and this is a true story) is that if you care enough about what you are doing, people will listen. Good movie. |
