Dissatisfying, but it's all right.

Too bad that this is all it amounted to. A succesful adaptation of Michael Crichton's "Congo" could have become one of the best science fiction movie ever. I love that book. It's a very engrosiing and suspenseful read about a jungle expedition. Yet the semi-faitfhful movie version is not quite that. It does have the potential to be great, but it winds up as an incomplete movie-going experience. It follows a great number of cliches (i.e. anyone who wanders away from the group dies, etc.), making it fairly predictable. Also, unlike other good tomb expedition movies (Indiana Jones, The Mummy, etc.) the movie lacks character development, and the majority of them are very hollow. The sound effects are good, but this movie has pretty bad visuals for a movie made barely a decade ago. The second half contains some rushed action, and "Congo" definitely has a solid amount of enertainment value, but it definitrly could have been much more. |
