Yes it's true: Keaton quit, the Joker is still dead and Burton (after a near nervous breakdown) moved from director to producer for the third film...
Yet... Batman Forever delivers in practically every capacity. Jim Carrey as The Riddler is manic genius, and Val Kilmer's duplicitous and unhappy Batman is outstanding and under appreciated. The Joel Schumacher (director) and Tim Burton (producer) hybrid was a success as Bob Kane's vision almost seems to come alive in this installment.
Perhaps one day a special edition will surface with the original cut of Batman Forever?(Approximately 30 minutes of deleted film mandated by WB including: nightmare sequences, intel on Claw Island and the rationale for the Sonar Suit among the cuts. |
