Sam Peckinpah at the height of his powers and unsurpassed performances by William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien (who steals the movie), Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, and Strother Martin (another scene stealer) combine to make this the finest Western ever made (sorry John Ford!). Controversial in its time, this film set the trend for a generation of action films. In some respects, The Wild Bunch is a counterpoint to Ride the High Country, both of which reveal how aging cowboys deal with the aging of the west. |
