Why is it that some actors are so underappreciated? Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt give the performances of their careers here, with so much talent going into each line and each action. This film directed by Neil Jordan is written by Anne Rice herself, who also wrote the book. Now, I cannot say that I read the novel, but Anne Rice approves of this movie, and when an author writes about how good the film is compaired to the book, then it has to be good.
So, the story is about Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt) who is infact a vampire. It is his wish to tell his story, because the suffering he has endured is something he wants to share. Perhaps it will make him feel better, who knows, but he goes to Daniel Malloy (Christain Slater), a journalist, and decides to undergo an interview.
Louis tells his story about how he felt nothing after his wife and daughter died to illness, and soon after wants death. However, another young vampire, Lestat (Tom Cruise) has something better to offer. Something far more rewarding then death. He offers him life without boundries. The life of a vampire.
Louis agrees to it, but doesn't realize the burden it holds. He doesn't realize that he'll never see the sun rise ever again, he doesn't realize that he'll have to take people's lives in order to survive. He doesn't realize that he'd rather have death then stay in this life, that is until he sucks the blood of a young girl, Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) and becomes attached to her. She is like a daughter to him. That is something worth living for.
Now, Louis, Lestat, and Claudia must deal with the fact that they may be alone, but they want to know for sure. Well, not so much Lestat who just wants to keep Louis and Claudia for himself. He doesn't want them to travel and see the world, afterall, they do owe him their lives, since they wouldn't be vampires if it weren't for him.
The story is haunting and just so amazing, that I didn't care if vampires don't exsist, because it made me believe. They were humans with human desires. I definately recommend this movie. |
