Remember that crap job you had at a convenience store? Kevin Smith does. And he brings it to life masterfully. From Dante's constant whining ("I'm not even supposed to BE here today!") to the pseudo-intellectual discussions held by intelligent people with nothing worthwhile to think about (the ethics of destroying the death star, for instance), Clerks shows the cynical reality of convenience store work with side-splitting humor. Linda Fiorentino and Marilyn Ghigliotti have stunningly bad performances, yet I still loved the movie. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure this is the movie Julia Roberts talks about in Step Mom when she explains that she heard a sex act described in a movie once.... This movie has so many things going against it: bad acting (except for the leads), low production value, being set in New Jersey... but I LOVED it! |
