Mindblowing...

'Heavenly Creatures' is- and I'm not bluffing- a film unlike any you have ever seen before. Most shocking of all, and something you are never allowed to forget, it is based on a true story.
It follows Pauline Rieper (Melanie Lynskey, in a stunning debut), a stodgy working class schoolgirl in New Zealand, as she meets, befriends and falls in love with Juliet Hulme (Kate Winslet, again excellent in her first movie outing) a smart, confident, upper class English girl. This would be fine and dandy in the present day but this is the Fifties, where lesbianism is seen as a possibly incurable "disorder". Their families, worried by the "unhealthy" association, try to separate the pair... with alarming- and murderous- consequences...
Whether zooming through a Heaven on Earth, mediaeval kingdom populated by clay people or being pursued by a singularly menacing Orson Welles, 'Heavenly Creatures' is an experience.
So what are you waiting for? Watch it- you will not be disappointed. |
