Edward D. Wood Jr. was arguably the worst film director of the last century - though there are a few that rival his status now. He was also a very interesting character. A cross dresser and an eccentric with tons of vision and ambition but zero talent. Johnny Depp plays him to perfection in a great role that suits his immense skills to a tee.
This film has great period detail and an ecellent performace by Martin Landou (which got him an Oscar) as the washed up, Morphine addicted Bela Lugosi who Wood develops a friendship with and casts him a few of his stinkers.
More tahn a biography this film remains offbeat throughout and tells its tale ina decidedly interseting visual style. Very funny and very quality film that I enjoyed very much. Depp and Landou make this film, though proving that Depp is one of the greatest character actors of our generation. Don't agree with me then check out his resume. Not too many stinkers there. An interesting tale about a man that few people knew anything about. Great re-creations of some of Wood's worst films -Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda. The man loved angora sweaters, too. |
