David Shayne is a mediocre playwright looking to get his latest play on Broaway. His producer strikes deal with a local gangster (Nick), if David gives his girlfriend Olive a part in his play, then he will offer full financial backing. The only problem is that Olive can't act and has this annoying voice, so David gives her the role of psychiatrist, which is a major role, but not the lead. The whole play seems to be coming along, but Olive's bodyguard Cheech has some ideas for some rewrites, and they are surprisingly good. As the rehearsals movie along, David ends up having an affair with Helen (Despite the fact that he has a long time girlfriend named Ellen, but no worries, she is getting some hot lovin' on the side too!), and aging, drunken actress who is the lead in the play. The play gets good reviews, and is scheduled to head to Broadway. On opening night, Cheech decides that he can't stand the thought of the world seeing Olive play the role of the psychiatrist and takes her down by the river and kills her. But, alas, the show must go one and the understudy takes on her role. The play is a huge hit, as it is coming to a close, Nick shows up and has Cheech killed backstage, but the audience just thinks it is pat of the play. Everyone is happy at the success of the play, and David realizes that he made a mistake having an affair with Helen, and confesses his love to Ellen and they decide to get married. |
