There goes John Woo...
by Neil (movies profile) Jan 8, 2009
I will keep this simple.

The gunfights are insane!!!John Woo's landmark film with over 100 dead bodies piling up in the end is just astonishing. Yeah, I know, for a Christian John Woo has little concern for death in this guilty pleasure. He does do his best to remain politically correct though...as with the baby scene.

Chow Yun-Fat creates an icon. Tony Leung adds needed depth. Anthony Wong as the bad guy is not much though...just cold.

There is a grace to John Woo's style of action. Even though it is not realistic, it contains emotion. You know when a character is angry not just by the yelling, but by the body language of the action. This is though, the last film truly influenced by Chang Cheh, Woo's mentor. John Woo's style, in my opinion, has actually matured. He has had misfortunes in America, but he has came out of it an even more interesting and effective filmmaker. His 2008 film Red Cliff shows less driving camera technique and more simple exposition juxtaposed with spectacular visuals. I will go more into it in the future on this website or IMDb
