Not Made For TV

I thought this movie was very strong and well-filmed, but, somehow, for me, it was difficult to understand and to believe in. The fact that the piano remained playable to any degree after it stood for a prolonged period, with its legs in the sand, on the beach in the rain and spray on the edge of the South Pacific was emblematic of a number of things that one had to accept as real to make this movie work. The movie was foreign from any reality that I have ever known or seen and I did not have the tools to comprehend as a parable or fantasy.
Ultimately, I also think that seeing it on my small TV did the movie a disservice, but that does not explain my inability to accept it on its own incomprehensible terms. |
