Probably the best Batman film out there.

Batman: The Animated Series, was probably the best show of the past twenty or so years. It was fun, intelligent, and well written, with an animation style that didn't just copy Walt Disney or some obscure Japanese animator.
So it only makes sense that the movie be just as good, if not better.
Well: The film's probably the best Batman film made to date (I haven't seen Batman Begins yet, so I'm not saying anything). The story is more adult than the Schumacher films, the character more interesting than the Burton films. This is the way a Batman film should be! It's just kind of sad that I'm saying that about a cartoon.
Basically, the premise is simple, so the kids won't get bored. Batman is being blamed for the murders of several of Gotham City's high profile gangsters. In reality, the person doing the job is Phantasm, a mysterious figure with a skull-like face and a bladed hand. Somewhere along the lines, a mobster, thinking Batman's coming for him next, hires The Joker to kill the dark knight.
Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne's old flame, Andrea Beaumont, comes back into town. There are lots of flashbacks, since Andrea wasn't a character on the TV series, and needed to be developed. She ties into Batman's origins, and also to his human side. It's sadly touching to see an animated love story that's better than ninety percent of the romances filling the shelves.
The film is, at heart, a comic book. There are several entertaining sequences, the best being a finale where Batman and The Joker fight in an amusement park. If youve ever watched the series, you know that the creators were forced to tone down the violence.
Not here: For god's sake, the movie's rated PG (For a cartoon in 1993, this is very surprising). The Joker is way creepier than the Jack Nicholson version. Batman gets believably bloodied up, and heck, there's even a hint at two characters having sex.
I wouldn't recommend this for kids exactly, but it's definitely something that superhero enthusiasts and action fans should sit through. The story's top-notch, the dialogue is some of the best for the genre, and the movie's just flat-out fun.
Maybe Joel Schumacher needed to watch this.
