THIS is the real Batman!

From the days of the movie-serials, Hollywood has tried to capture the Dark Knight on film, whether it be a loyal vision of Bob Kane's original creation or the insufferable Adam West version of those wacky sixties. Tim Burton did the best job in the original Batman of 1989, but it still hinted of the campiness inherent of the television series, even if it was unintentional.

Mask of the Phantasm, however, did what Butron could not: capture the character on film in a way that made you gasp at the mysterious, haunted nature of Bruce Wayne's alter ego. Yes, the animation is flawed, and yes, you can deduce the identity of the Phantasm within the first half-hour of the film-but the story itself is a powerful piece of work (the scene where The Batman confronts his long-lost love Andrea-"Are you still following your father's orders?" "As I see it, the only one here who's controlled by his parents is you!"-is a nice piece of drama). As a Batman fan since my days in elementary school, this movie was the closest thing I've ever encountered to the Batman that I envisioned as a kid.
