Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest directors in history. If you like Unforgiven you'll love A Perfect World. Kevin Costner (who I'm not normally a fan of) gives what I think is his best performance ever as an escaped convict in Texas during the 60's. Like Unforgiven this film speaks to the choices imperfect people make, the consequences of those choices sometimes years after they've been made, and the search for redemption. There are no truly good guys and no truly bad guys and in both movies the chase for the supposed bad guys really only serves as a conduit to tell of the conflicts these characters have woven. This film did not receive wide commercial success. This is probably because this is a very cerebral film. No big special effects, lots of dialog, and no happy ending. A friend of mine said it's one of those movies that depresses you so bad you'll want to kill yourself. |
