The Age of Excellent Filmmaking
by Mike (movies profile)
Nov 5, 2007
Martin Scorsese, one of America's most brilliant and versatile filmmakers takes a departure from the mean streets of modern day New York with this contemporary masterpiece by Edith Wharton about 1870's New York society, and a gentleman named Newland Archer (skillfully played by Daniel Day-Lewis), who is engaged to marry a beautiful, refined young woman named May Welland. His eyes shift to her cousin, the gorgeous Countess Olenska (the luminous Michelle Pfeiffer), who is seeking divorcement from her husband. Olenska is a shameful embarassment to upper class society, but Archer is somehow drawn to her and thus, must make a choice between the two women. With mesmerizing cinematography by Michael Ballhaus, an intoxicating operatic score, the wonderful costumes and food, and the pitch-perfect performances (including Joanne Woodward who narrates Edith Wharton's story), The Age of Innocence is a modern-day masterpiece you won't soon forget. |
