Now let me ask DeNiro something: why doesn't he direct more movies if they're gonna be this good?

This is a realistic story about a young Italian boy, Calogero, growing up in the Bronx during the 1960s. He befriends the Mafia kingpin, Sonny, of the neighbourhood and grows up to idolize him even against his father's (DeNiro) wishes, whom he still respects. Throughout the movie he's constantly struggling to decide whether to listen to his father's advice and build strong working ethics or to take the more attractive road that leads to a life of crime.

Great storyline; it deals with issues Italians faced in New York at the time and unlike most gangster flicks the plot is a lot more realistic. There's no showdown between Sonny and an unlikely hero like Calogero's dad. Rather it is Sonny's death in the end that brings peace between Calogero and his dad.

Definetely not your typical commericial Hollywood crap, maybe that's why it's so unappreciated by the average moron. But the truth is that not many movies can top this one in its category.
