The signifigance of this story shows how mothers of every time and background, have always given up things for their daughters sake. From China in the 1940's when war had just broken out, four brave women, with nothing to loose, and hope for a new life travel to America. Hope for their daughters has been the rock wich had held them together for so long. They join each week, at their Mahjong club (nicknamed JoyLuck). When June's mother had just passed away, she becomes confused, but through the course of the movie, she grows stronger than any of the other daughters through belief and her mothers memory.
