I must say that "Gettysburg" ranks as one of my all-time favorite civil war movies. I actually remember when it was just coming out in '93 (a short article about the movie appeared in the local paper), but i dont think it made the theaters.
Of course, I must admit that Im a Civil War History buff, which both makes me overly favorable to this movie and a little bit of a stickler about the details. Minor technicalities like the 20th Maine Regiment not being present during Pickett's charge and so forth. I dont think, however, that these inaccuracies take away from the movie, which in itself is one of the most authentic historically accurate movies i've seen. It would have been nice to incorporate women into the story, but not entirely necessary (notwithstanding political correctness).
Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, and especially Richard Jordan did wonderful acting. Some of the story did seem a little bit of a drag, if only to add depth and keep true to Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels."
The visuals, at least for a period before the Matrix-like computer graphics, were terrific! To put 5,000 re-enactors out on the field and be able to capture them marching in force towards the Union lines is pretty amazing, especially without all the CGX stuff.
Overall, I would say this movie ranks up there with "Glory" and other memorable civil war movies. Although quite long and full of expository, "Gettysburg" remains true to the story on which it's based, true to historical authenticity, and true to the spirit of that period.
