This is an accurate account of the most important battle of the Civil War. Despite being outnumbered by the North, the South had won some major victories in the preceding months, partly due to the superior leadership of Robert E Lee. He hoped to achieve victory at Gettysburg, and then press for a peace treaty with the North. The big mistake was by J E B Stuart, who was a day late arriving with cavalry, because he was pursuing Union soldiers elsewhere. The cavalry was not at Gettysburg when it was needed, to prevent the Union soldiers from becoming established on the higher ground.
Martin Sheen performed perfectly, he was better as Lee than Robert Duvall in Gods and Generals, although that movie was overall even better than this one. Tom Berenger was ideal for his role as well. |
