Get past Sly, a kick-@ss policeman(?) sentenced to hard time in a cryo-prison (where they freeze you in ice and subliminally "re-educate" you) for trying to save a bunch of hostages, and you've got a pretty good movie!
Wesley Snipes played Simon Phoenix (great name), a psychopathic terrorist frozen with Sly, and he never got a better role (besides perhaps the immortal Willie Mays-Hayes). Sandra Bullock was nothing short of NAUGHTY, and the remaining cast was highly effective. Man was Sandra Bullock naughty!!
The future portrayed Southern California as sort of a wussed-out Brave New World society, where violence, profanity, sex, and spicy foods were illegal (and all restaurants were Taco Bell). Dennis Leary calms his ranting down enough to play a convincing character.
This was really one of Sly's best movies. I remember going to Taco Bell in between football practices one summer and seeing this stuff all over the restuarant, so it holds a special place in my heart. |
