And awesome score by Louis Armstrong. Was there ever a better role for Jimmy Stewart? Hitchcock often missed out on the funny Jimmy Stewart, whereas Otto Preminger lets him hit the dry jokes without diluting the intensity or passion of this performance. The setting is unusual, in rural Upper Michigan, and it's based on a true story and a famous local prosecutor. Sometimes dramas about murder in small towns glamorize the location or kitsch up the characters, but in this movie you feel the small town grit and the uncomplicated but often darkly mysterious nature of the locals. Best to view this on the Big Screen, so if you can catch it at the Stanford, run do not walk! |
