Anatomy of a good film
by TonyM (movies profile) Jul 15, 2008
Otto Preminger directs the screenplay (Written by Wendell Mayes) of the novel by John D. Voelker, in the film the main character lawyer Paul Biegler played with his usual laid-back style by James Stewart. In the film many of the scenes are shot in a courtroom, Lt. Frederick Manion played by Ben Gazzara is accused of murdering the man that raped his wife. Lee Remick plays the wife Laura Manion, her overt sexual behavior is put on trial, did she flirt with the murderer or did the victim just rape her to satisfy his own lust. In the court case, Stewart is up against the prosecutor Asst. State Atty. Gen. Claude Dancer played by George C. Scott.
The whole film is basically ahead of it’s time for even a late fifties film putting the sexuality of the woman on trial, as with the majority of good films it is the roles taken by the extra’s that make the film more believable and so better. A brilliant look into small town fifties America and its outlook on sex and the married or single woman.
