Pros: Solid acting, not a bad performance anywhere.
Cons: Not particularly memorable, book was a lot better.
Review:
I read this book about five or six years ago. I had not seen the movie until recently when I caught it on cable one night. I was surpised to see Holly Hunter was nominated for an oscar for this movie because she is barely in it. I think it was a situation where they wanted to nominate the whole cast symbollically because there isn't a bad performaance in here.
Anyway, this movie is good, it's not great. The book is great, so I would strongly advise checking out the book. This movie is entertaining, although some parts are boring and the acting is good but it all adds up to a good movie not a great one. I particularly like Jeanne Tripplehorn's performance in this. I think Tripplehorn and Hackman provide the best acting in the film. I think if anyone deserved to be nominated for an oscar it should have been Tripplehorn not Hunter, but oh well. Tom Cruise does good in a typical Tom Cruise role, this doesn't really stretch his limits too much. It's worth a look on cable or if you are a big Tom Cruise fan, otherwise look for the book. The book is much more entertaining. |
