A Western to end all Westerns

The Western genre is a genre that usually embraces the cliches that it's attributed. Few actually end up breaking them. John Ford's "The Searchers" is one; Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" is another. Clint Eastwood paints a dreary tale of a retired gunslinger, William Muny, who is thrown back into the old ways in order to provide for his family.

The realism that is inserted into this film is what really sets it apart. Muny teams up with a young "killer" who can hardly see 10 feet in front of his face. When his other partner, Ned (played by the great Morgan Freeman), is faced with finishing off one of the men their contracted to kill, he just can stomach it. And he's an old professional killer!

Eastwood as a director is at the top of his form here. There are really some beautiful outdoor scenes in the film. He really learns what a lot of directors neglect: you have to let the camera absorb the scene, not force it into the camera. What Eastwood does with "Unforgiven" is what few westerns ever do: trandescend the genre.
